Updated 11 Dec 2009 - Watch this page for updates!

Some time ago, I released details for configuring UKNOS (The UK Varient of JNOS110) to facilitate the use of 16-bit windows applications (mailers, newsreaders browsers etc) to compliment NOS under windows 3.1 and windows95. This has provided many of you with a convenient user interface to NOS.

Since this original work, UKNOS development has ceased. The current UKNOS code has Y2K compliance issues associated wth it, so I have investigated a number of ways to interface the currently supported JNOS111x code with WFW 3.11, Win95 and Win98 including Second Edition (Not NT, 2000 or ME!) and of course all the modern 32-Bit internet applications you're familiar with..

Work on this is now complete using the NDIS3PKT v2.4 (or greater) driver available from Dan Lanciani in the U.S.A at www.danlan.com . I have subsequently written full configuration instructions which are published in the Word97 & RTF files KIPGWIN99 in the links below. In addition, I have included 2 compiles of JNOS111E which are fully compatible with this interface. The ECO and ELS are the Client Only and Limited Server versions respectively. Limited server includes nntp server capabilities.

NEW : Having problems running NOS in a window under Win98SE/Me? Try this

  • Download KIPGWIN99 Setup Instructions (Rich Text Format)
  • Download JNOS111E (Client Only Version - Includes SCC Support)
  • Download JNOS111E (Limited Server Version - Includes SCC Support)
  • Download JNOS111E (Client with Netrom & SCC Support)
  • Download JNOS111E (Limited Server, Netrom & SCC Support)
  • Download PKUNZIP Version 2.04g
  • Visit the home of NDIS3PKT
  • Visit the TUCOWS internet utils download site
  • APRS Maps Download for UIVIEW - See the APRS Maps Page

Additionally, included below is a downloadable zip of KIPG NosInst2K, the JNOS automated install utility written by Dave G4POI, customised by myself and Steve G8SFR and with UK mods to the JNOS source code by Robin G8ECJ (Now ZL3ROB). As a user new to TCP/IP, this will setup JNOS111E on your system along with the SNEWS newsreader and VIEWMAIL external mail reader. To install, follow these instructions:

  • Download PKUNZIP.EXE (above) to a directory on your path (i.e C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND).
  • Create a directory called NOSINST from Drive C and click on the link to NosInst2K below. Choose "Save As" and save the file to C:\NOSINST
  • Once downloaded, close your internet connection and open an MS-DOS prompt.
  • Type CD \ <return> followed by CD C:\NOSINST <return>
  • Unzip the ZIP file by typing PKUNZIP -od <Filename.zip>
  • To run the install program, simply type NOSINST, BAYINST or XYWINST (Depending on version) <return> and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Once Installed, reboot your PC and put your TNC into KISS mode (if applicable).
  • To Start JNOS, open an MS-DOS prompt and type TCP <return>

  • Visit the Thames Valley IP Users Group site for details of the new G4XYW 9k6 modem. This will interface with XywInst2K when released. A great little modem for 9k6 at a fraction of the cost of a TNC!
